A little bit of history of how we came to be...

From Great Lake Taupo, New Zealand, timeless streamed seamless radio, 24/7 on Radio 106.4 FM...

 

It all started with Radio Hauraki in the 1970s liberating radio from government proprietary.

 

Since then, NZ has become one of the MOST radio/d countries in the world.

 

Taupo has 10 commercial stations yet ONLY one is privately and locally owned. Profits from those other 9, in other words, go overseas to their international shareholders.  Credit due though, they do provide local employment.

 

To assist local ownership back into Taupo and other regions, in 2008 the Government locked the network stations out of the auction of Government allocated radio frequencies.

 

Historically frequencies were snapped up by the networks at prices a NZer could not compete against. Campaigners of NZ owned radio were jubilant at the coupe. There was a downside though.

 

Rules were written to prescribe to NZ radio operations. Something vital to the networks’ success was exempt to the local owners and that was multi-branding.

 

As a consequence, many hopeful local operations have fallen. 

 

So we must compete extremely hard to survive, as we do not get natural access to any of The Radio Bureau funding that the national network is provided.
